BANDITRY WILL BE DEFEATED SOON--PRESIDENT BUHARI REASSURES NIGERIANS

President Muhammadu Buhari has reassured Nigerians that ending banditry remains a key priority of his administration and he would do whatever it takes to ensure the country's security system confronts these public enemies with merciless determination.

Reacting to  the recent spike in reported incidents of banditry and kidnappings in some parts of the country, President Buhari while condoling all those affected by the unfortunate events, described himself as one of the unhappiest leaders in the world.

"How can I be happy and indifferent to the senseless killings of my fellow citizens by bandits? I am human and I understand the pains of the victims and their families who have been traumatized and impoverished by constant ransom demands by bandits", the President said empathetically.

"The politicisation of tragedy reveals the darkest sides of our primitive politics. Almost every week, I summon my security chiefs to get an update on the strategies being devised to defeat these mass murderers.

"There is no issue that dominates my mind every 24 hours like security because, as an elected President, protecting the citizens of my country is one of the primary functions of my administration.

"I constantly listen to our security personnel in order to understand their problems and needs, and I have never hesitated to attend to those needs in terms of motivating and equipping them to respond effectively to our security challenges.

"It is therefore ridiculous to suggest that I am indifferent to these killings.

"I have ordered rapid and robust deployment of troops to all the areas currently under attack from bandits and we are determined to tackle this challenge ferociously until these remorseless killers are crushed and utterly defeated," the President said.

President Buhari called on communities where banditry is active to support and cooperate with the security agencies, particularly the recently launched Operation Puff Adder to battle bandits and kidnappers.

The President said it was regrettable that bandits have informants within some communities and utterly reprehensible that certain communities have signed protection deals with bandits at the expense of other communities, thereby creating complications and frustrating government's intervention

He appealed to communities to report suspicious movements of the bandits into their areas within the shortest available opportunity, especially considering the fact that  intelligence is critical to detecting, frustrating, neutralising and defeating the criminals.

Onnoghen resigns as CJN ‘with immediate effect’

Walter Onnoghen has resigned as the chief justice of Nigeria (CJN) with immediate effect.

He turned in his resignation letter to President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday evening, a day after the National Judicial Council (NJC) recommended that he be compulsorily retired for misconduct.
By virtue of section 306 of the 1999 constitution, his resignation takes immediate effect.

Court remands ex-Police Inspector Olalekan Ogunyemi charged with murdering Kolade Johnson

An Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, on Friday ordered the remand of Olalekan Ogunyemi, ex-Police Inspector who has been charged with murdering 36-year-old Kolade Johnson.

The magistrate, Mrs. A.O. Salawu, ordered that Ogunyemi be remanded at Ikoyi Prisons pending advice from State Director of Public Prosecutions.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Kehinde Olatunde, had told the court that the defendant committed the offence on March 31, at 5.10p.m., at Onipetesi Estate, Idi-Mangoro, Lagos.

Ogunyemi, 45, who resides at No. 17, Alhaji Ede St., Igando, was arraigned on a count of murder Olatunde said that Ogunyemi used his AK-47 rifle to shoot dead 36-year-old Kolade Johnson. The prosecutor said that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Section 223 stipulates a death sentence if convicted.

Olatunde informed the court that he had a remand application order by the Police to remand the defendant for the next 30 days.

The plea of the defendant was not taken by the court.

Counsel to the defendant, Sola Adeyemi, had urged the court to instead remand the defendant for the next 14 days as against the application of the prosecutor.

Magistrate Salawu granted the application of the prosecutor and ordered 30-day remand and adjourned the case until May 6.

Police arrest two over killing of UNILAG medical graduate, Stephen Urueye

The Lagos police command says it has arrested two persons in connection with the killing of a medical graduate of the University of Lagos, Stephen Urueye, at the Idi Araba area of the metropolis, yesterday April 4th. Urueye had his convocation on Wednesday April 3rd.

According to the Lagos police command, the two suspects, Gbadebo Jimoh and Malik Adeboye, were arrested by men of the Itire Police division.

Both suspects were said to have specialised in snatching phones, money and other valuables in the idi-araba area, where the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) is located.

Both have been transferred to the state criminal investigation department at the Yaba area of Lagos for further investigation.

New FIFA ranking: Super Eagles move to third in Africa

The Super Eagles are now ranked third in Africa after moving up four places to 42 in the latest FIFA ranking released on Thursday. The three-time African champions earned wins against Seychelles and Egypt in the last international window, which pushed them up the ranking.


Senegal’s national team, the Teranga Lions, are Africa’s top team while second-place Tunisia, Morocco (fourth) and the DR Congo (fifth), complete the top five slots for Africa. Along with Ghana, they were the only African teams to make the top 50.


The biggest mover in March was Tanzania (131st, up 6) – coached by Nigerian Emmanuel Amuneke – having booked their place at the Africa Cup of Nations after 39 years in the doldrums.


With 150 games played across the globe during the international period, things remained tight at the top of the ranking, as the top three remained unchanged.


This sees Belgium (1st, unchanged) maintain a slender lead growing it marginally to three points over 2018 World Cup winners France (2nd, unchanged). Woman in tears as Fr. Mbaka splashes N3.5 Million after she gave birth to quadruplets.

The founder of Adoration Ministry in Enugu state, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, brought joy to a family who recently welcomed a set of quadruplets.

Rev. Mbaka visited a member of his ministry who gave birth to the lovely four babies and took care of the hospital bill of 1.5million naira. The cleric also donated the sum of N2 million to the woman’s husband to support his business.

BREAKING: Police Dismiss Inspector For ‘Shooting And Killing Kolade Johnson’

The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed an officer, Inspector Ogunyemi Olalekan, after he was found guilty of killing Kolade Johnson.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Lagos State, Mr Bala Elkana, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.

UPDATE ON THE TRIAL OF THE POLICE OFFICERS ALLEGED TO BE INVOLVED IN THE SHOOTING OF KOLADE JOHNSON…SUSPECT HANDED OVER TO CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION DEPARTMENT, PANTI FOR PROSECUTION

The two Police Officers alleged to have been involved in the shooting of Kolade Johnson on 31/03/2019 were apprehended and subjected to internal disciplinary proceedings,  known as Orderly Room Trial by the Command.

The Orderly Room trial commenced on Monday 01/04/2019 and ended on Thursday 04/04/2019.

They were tried on  three count charges: (1) Discreditable Conduct (2) Unlawful and Unnecessary Exercise of Authority and (3) Damage to Clothing or Other Articles contrary to Paragraph E (iii), Q (ii) and D (i) First Schedule, Police Act and Regulations, Cap 370 LFN 1990.

The Trial started with the reading of charges and taking of plea.

Five witnesses testified.

At the conclusion of the trial, the first defaulter, Inspector Ogunyemi Olalekan was found guilty of Discreditable conduct by acting in a manner prejudicial to discipline and unbecoming of members of the Force by shooting and killing Kolade Johnson; Unlawful and Unnecessary exercise of authority by using unnecessary violence, by using AK 47 rifle on the deceased in total neglect to the provisions of Force Order 237 on the use of Firearms.

The Adjudicating Officer, CSP Indyar Apev awarded the punishment of dismissal from service and prosecution to the First defaulter.

There was no evidence linking the second defaulter, Sergeant Godwin Orji to the shooting, he was therefore found not guilty and discharged and acquitted.

The First defaulter, Inspector Ogunyemi Olalekan is handed over to Criminal Investigation Department, Panti for prosecution in conventional Court.

Anglican bursar, Gabriel Kola Abiodun shot dead at diocesan office in Ondo State

Some men suspected to be armed robbers have allegedly killed the bursar of the Akure Diocese of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Gabriel Kola Abiodun.


It was gathered that the deceased was shot dead at the diocesan office at Alagbaka, Akure, the Ondo State capital this morning shortly after returning from bank with N500,000 meant for the church.


His remains has been evacuated and taken to the mortuary by some policemen.


The Public Relations Officer of Ondo State Police Command, Femi Joseph confirmed the incident, saying the police has swung into action to apprehend the killers.

Nigerian footballer Peter Odemwingie announces retirement from football

Former Super Eagles of Nigeria forward, Peter Odemwingie, has announced his retirement from football at the age of 37.


The ex-West Brom and Stoke striker who played for Nigeria more than 60 times, scoring at the 2014 World Cup, including scoring 36 goals in 129 Premier League appearances between 2010 and 2016, made the announced at UEFA’s Equal Game conference at Wembley on Wednesday.

On his retirement, Odemwingie said: "It's an emotional day, so many memories go through your head.

"I didn't know how to do it or where to do it, but I think this is the right place to do it. Wembley is a place with a lot of history in football."

Odemwingie, who last played for Indonesian side Madura United intends to embark on a coaching career.

"The next chapter is slowly building up to a coaching career and hopefully I will be coaching in the Premier League one day," he said.

The father of two started his senior career with Bendel Insurance in 2000, and later moved on to Belgium's La Louvière. He also played for  Lille, Lokomotiv Moscow, West Bromwich Albion, Cardiff City, Stoke City, Rotherham United, and Madura United.

Federal Govt Feeds Pupils With 594 Cattle, 138,000 Chickens, 6.8Million Eggs and 83 Metric Tons Of Fish On A Weekly Basis – Osinbajo.

Vice President Prof Yemi Osinbajo on Monday said the federal government feeds public school pupils with 594 cattle, 138,000 chickens, 6.8million eggs and 83 metric tons of fish on a weekly basis.

Professor Osinbajo disclosed this while delivering a lecture titled ‘Nigeria Rising: The Path to Prosperity’ at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) 50th convocation.

He said that at a cost of $0.19 per child per day, the FG is able to provide a balanced meal for every one of the 9,300,892 pupils in 49,837 public primary schools in 26 states across Nigeria.

The programme, according to him, employs 95,422 cooks and over 100,000 small holder farmers linked to the programme supplying locally sourced ingredients.

“The programme aims to provide 50% of the recommended nutrient intake targets for protein and prioritized micro-nutrients including iron, iodine, zinc, vitamin A, folate and vitamin C and 30% of energy because of the high burden of under-nutrition and micro-nutrient deficiencies in Nigeria.

“There is also a de-worming programme attached to the school feeding programme,” he explained.

The FG, according to Osinbajo, took the decision to embark on a School Feeding Programme as an important part of its human capital development agenda, by tackling the broader issues of eradication of poverty, food and nutrition security as well as increasing school enrolment.

He therefore stressed that prosperity will be attained if Nigeria is able to address the issues of extreme poverty, productivity, corruption, the rule of law and the deficiencies in the quality of human resources caused by poor education and healthcare.

FIRS extends ‘account freeze’ for tax defaulters — plans to recover N750bn by June

Babatunde Fowler, executive chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), says the service plans to recover N750 billion from 55,000 defaulting taxpayers by extending its account substitution policy.

Fowler was speaking in Abuja on Tuesday during a meeting with the joint house committees on finance; appropriations; and aids, loans and debt on the 2019/2021 Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP).

According to him, a bank account substitution exercise has already pulled 500 defaulters into the tax net, leading to a recovery of N23.25 billion.

He said the same exercise will be extended till June to get 55,000 tax defaulters with a turnover of N100 million and above into the tax net.

“From the Bank accounts substitution exercise, we used banking information to bring non-compliant taxpayers with N1 billion and above turnover to comply. It has so far resulted in the recovery of N23.35 billion,” Fowler said.

“The exercise has been extended to cover those with a turnover of N100 million and above. To date, about 500 of them have come forward and they have paid and we have collected in the region of about N24 billion.

“We believe we should be able to go through the 55,000 before the middle of this year which will be the middle of this year, June 30th. In terms of estimates, which we should be able to generate from this exercise alone, that will be about N750 billion.”

The “substitution” empowers FIRS to appoint the banks as collection agents for tax, and all tax defaulters will have their accounts frozen or put under substitution pending when they come forward.

KPMG, one of the Big Four auditors in the world, had said the move is draconian and Companies Income Tax Act (CITA) 2004.

After KPMG’s observations, FIRS wrote to banks, directing them to lift the lien on alleged tax defaulters’ bank accounts for 30 days.

Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday, he revealed that the policy has be extended.

Fowler said the tax administration agency recorded an increase in Value Added Tax (VAT) collection between 2015 and 2018, with 85 percent of that amount going to state governments.

“Out of about N5.3 trillion, a large percentage is shared between states and local governments. In VAT, there has been a growth of over 44% between 2015 and 2018. And that is at the current rate of 5%.

“85 percent of VAT goes to the state governments who are supposed to be closer to the people. So they can use that money as approved by their state houses of assembly…they can use that money on education, infrastructure, etc.”

He said the service is broadening its VAT collection scope using modern technology with the adoption of States Accountants Generals (SAG) collection platform, VAT Auto-Collect, integration of the GIFMIS (Government Integrated Financial Management Information System) platform with Ministries, Departments and Agencies, (MDAs) and through e-Service payment options.

Fowler said the FIRS also initiated income tax on property owners in Abuja and Lagos, clarifying that it is not a property tax.

He said this was part of efforts to deepen tax revenue collection and expand the nation’s tax net as well as increase the revenue base with plans to extend the exercise to other locations beginning with Oyo and Kaduna states.

On tax audit exercise of the service, Fowler said the National Tax Audit (NTA) contributed the sum of N212. 79 billion to tax collection in 2018 and is expected to “produce increased audit yield in 2019”.

Osun Guber: Court nullifies Adeleke’s nomination as PDP candidate over certificate forgery

Justice Oathman Musa of an Abuja High Court sitting in Bwari Area Council of Abuja on Tuesday Nullified the nomination of Senator Ademola Adeleke as candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in the September 2018 Governorship Election in Osun State.

Adeleke, who represents Osun West Senatorial District at the National Assembly was the PDP’s candidate in the 2018 governorship election in Osun state.

Two Chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Wahab Raheem and Adam Habeeb, had in 2018 barely few days to the governorship election in Osun State had dragged Adeleke to court, accusing him of not possessing the requisite educational qualification (secondary school certificate) to contest for the office of governor.

They prayed the court for an order to disqualify Adeleke from participating in the Sept 22 governorship election in the state on the grounds that he does not possess the requisite educational qualification.

Delivering judgment in the suit Tuesday, Justice Musa annulled Adeleke’s nomination on the grounds that Adeleke offended section 177 of the 1999 constitution as amended. The section stipulated that candidates for the position of governor must be educated up to secondary school level.

According to Justice Musa, while the court’s findings showed that Adeleke entered secondary school in 1976, there was no record to show that he actually graduated as his name was no longer seen in the school’s register from 1980.

Justice Musa further stated that the result Adeleke attached to his form CF001 which he submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was fake, as it was found to be different from the one presented to the court by the principal of Ede Muslim High School, Ede, Osun State.

Meanwhile, Adeleke’s lawyer Nathaniel Oke SAN has faulted the judgment of Justice Musa on the grounds that the judge erred in law by going out of hiy way to source for evidence to arrive at his “unjust conclusion”.

He submitted that the court erred particularly when it ignored WAEC evidence that Adeleke was educated up to Secondary School level as required by law.

The identities of the policemen suspected to have carried out the shooting of Kolade Johnson have been revealed. They are Inspector Ogunyemi Olalekan and Sergeant Godwin Orji, both attached to Anti Cultism Squad of the Lagos Police Command.


The police have since vowed to ensure justice is served.

General Superintendent, Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor William Kumuyi on Sunday said women who put on men's wears are abomination unto God.

Kumuyi, who was preaching on the topic: “The Inner and Outward Beauty of Kingdom Citizens,” at the Sunday worship service of the church in Gbagada area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, said the Bible said specifically that men should not put on women’s wear neither should women put on men’s wears.

The man of God quoted Deuteronomy 22:5 to back his assertion, which read: “The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the Lord thy God.”

Five Nigerians Arrested For 'Stealing' Dh2.3million In The UAE

The Police in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) say they have arrested five Nigerians who "stormed a money exchange in Sharjah and fled with Dh2.3 million".

According to Dubai-based newspaper Khaleej Times, the men barged into the exchange and smashed the glass barrier between the customers and the staff, stole the money in multiple currencies and fled.

When converted, the money amounts N225.4million.

Two employees at the exchange were injured as they resisted the robbers, one of them eventually managing to notify the Police.

The paper said the Sharjah Police coordinated with forces from Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah and Ajman to nab the suspects from four emirates within 48 hours after the robbery was committed.

The incident was reported at Al Ansari Exchange in Al Tawoon area, a top police official saying the suspects came to the UAE on visit visas on March 18.

For two days, they studied the exchange office before deciding to commit the robbery around midnight — just before the shop was to close. On March 20, four suspects stormed into the exchange office, while one waited in a car outside. After the four suspects rushed out with the money, they fled in a car.

Major-General Saif Al Zeri Al Shamsi, Commander-in-Chief of the Sharjah Police, said the whole amount had been recovered.

"The police team reached the site within seven minutes after the robbery was reported,” Khaleej Times quoted the police officer as saying. “The injured staff members were rushed to the hospital, where they were discharged the next day.”

The police lifted forensic evidence from the site and formed a team to crack the case. "Arrest warrants for the suspects were circulated at all ports of the country to prevent them from leaving."

The police retrieved the number plate of the car in which the suspects fled. One of the suspects was arrested in Sharjah, after which he led the police to the others — two in Ajman, one in Abu Dhabi and one in Ras Al Khaimah.

All the suspects were said to have confessed to the crime.

Femi Gbajabiamala declares his interest to contest Speakership position in the 9th assembly

Femi Gbajabiamila, member of the house of representatives from Lagos state, has declared to contest for the position of speaker in the 9th assembly.

Speaking during his televised declaration in Abuja on Sunday, the lawmaker who represents Surulere 1 federal constituency, said he is in the race as a “beacon of hope”.

Gbajabiamila, who is currently the majority leader in the 8th assembly, is a fifth-term member in the All Progressives Congress (APC) who also ran for speakership in 2015 but lost to Yakubu Dogara.

The APC is expected to produce the next speaker of the house, as it currently has an overwhelming majority in the green chamber.

According to the lawmaker, he is contesting for the position as “a symbol of encouragement and point of contact for the many young men and women out there who believe that with hardwork and commitment whatever the mind can conceive is possible.”

He said he is contesting for speaker to bring government closer to the people and to “galvanise federal lawmakers to make life more abundant for Nigerians.”

“We are not where we ought to be considering the abundance of talents and the blessings from God. However, I am rest assured that slowly but surely we will get there,” he said.

“It is because of this unshakeable belief in the potential and genius of Nigeria and the majesty of our democracy that I today, after wide consultations with my colleagues, friends, family, party and stakeholders and in total submission to the will of God, today formally declare my intention to seek the position of the office of the speaker of the 9th Assembly and offer my service to the nation in this capacity.

“With all sense of humility, I seek this office with a rich legislative background and pedigree and having just won a historic 5th term mandate to the house, I have in the last 16 years dedicated my life to the service of my constituents and Nigeria.

How consumption of ‘Ewedu’ can help prevent cancer, coronary diseases – Nutritionist

Mr Olugbenga Jagun, a nutritionist at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital ( UATH), Gwagalada, has said that jute leaf known as ‘Ewedu’ can prevent cancer and coronary diseases due to its richness in antioxidants and phytochemicals.

Jagun said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Abuja.

The jute leaf is one of the common African leafy vegetables cultivated in gardens and farms for home use.

Innoson to take over GTBank? Here's what you should know

Innoson Vehicles Manufacturing, a Nigerian automobile company, has claimed that it has obtained a nod from court to take over Guaranty Trust Bank, one of the largest deposit money banks in the country.

In a statement first shared on its Twitter page on Friday, Innoson said the Supreme Court upheld the ruling earlier given at the federal high court in Ibadan.

Innoson’s statement

The statement released by Cornel Osigwe, Innoson’s head of corporate communications read: “The Chairman of Innoson Group, Chief Dr Innocent Chukwuma, OFR has through a Writ of FiFa taken over Guaranty Trust Bank PLC for and on behalf of Innoson Nigeria Ltd as a result of the Bank’s indebtedness to Innoson Nigeria Ltd. In a landmark decision on February 27th 2019, the Supreme Court of Nigeria dismissed GTB’s appeal – SC. 694/2014- against the judgment of Court of Appeal, Ibadan Division.

“The Court of Appeal, Ibadan division had in its decision of 6th February 2014 dismissed GTB’s appeal against the Federal High Court, Ibadan Division.

“Thus, the Court of Appeal affirmed the judgment of the Federal High Court, Ibadan Division which ordered GTB by way of Garnishee order absolute – to pay N2.4 Billion to Innoson with a 22% interest, per annum, on the judgment sum until the final liquidation of the judgment debt.

“Rather than obey the judgment of the Court of Appeal, GTB approached the Supreme Court to challenge the Court of Appeal’s decision.

“However in an ruling delivered by Honourable Olabode Rhodes-Vivour JSC on Wednesday, February 27th2019, the Lord Justices of the Supreme Court (JSC) dismissed GTB’s appeal and thus affirmed the concurrent judgment of both the Court of Appeal and the Federal High Court, Ibadan Division which ordered GTB by way of Garnishee order absolute – to pay N2.4 Billion to Innoson with a 22% interest, per annum, on the judgment until the final liquidation of the judgment.

“The Judgment debt of N2.4B has an accrued interest as at today of about N6,717,909,849.96 which results to about N8.8 Billion.

“Based on the Supreme Court’s decision of 27th February 2019 the counsel to Innoson, Prof McCarthy Mbadugha ESQ, had approached the Federal High Court, Awka Division for leave to enforce the judgment having obtained Certificates of Judgment from the Ibadan Division of the Federal High Court.

“Having obtained the requisite leave, the Federal High Court issued the necessary process for levying execution – the Writ of Fifa.”

In response to the judgement, Erhi Obebeduo, company secretary of the bank, said: “The attention of Guaranty Trust Bank Plc (“the Bank”} has been drawn to statements circulating in the news and social media in respect of a purported enforcement of a Judgment of the Federal High Court, Ibadan, Oyo State. at one of its branches in Anambra State.

“The Bank as a law-abiding corporate citizen is taking all necessary legal steps to address this situation and ensure that no illegal or fraudulent execution is carried out.

“It is important to state that the Judgment allegedly in issue is in respect of Garnishee Proceedings against the account of the Nigerian Customs Service Board domiciled with the Bank and not against the Bank as an entity.

“The Bank remains committed to providing best-in-class customer experience to all its valued Customers.”

What is a Writ of FiFa?

A Writ of Fieri Facias is a legal instrument issued after a judgement and it is used to seize the assets of a judgment debtor till the debt in question is settled.

Usually, only the debtor’s property that can satisfy the judgment is held.

In the case of Guaranty Trust Bank, which has assets in trillions, only a portion of assets identified by the court would be held.

Will my deposits be affected?

Your deposits cannot be affected as they have been insured by the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Company (NDIC) and every bank has a deposit with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), which it can get in desperate times to stay afloat.

Assets of the bank like buildings and its stake in other entities are on the line here and the shareholders of the bank will be ones to be affected by this if and when the payment is made.

Fresh Kid, a Ugandan rapper whose real name is Patrick Sseyonjo has been threatened with jail if he doesn’t stop doing music. The threat came from the country’s Minister of Youth Affairs, Florence Nakiwala. In a chat with BBC, she warned that if the 7-year old doesn’t quit music, he might be forced to be taken to a juvenile prison.

An American Surgeon based in Lagos Nigeria has taken to her heels after killing a Nigeria Beauty Queen in a failed fat transfer surgery for buttocks and hips enlargement.
